Back - Operation of a Browser to return to the previous web page.
Bookmark - Operation of a browser to store a previous URL.
Browser - A computer program that allows the user to view pages written in HTML by selecting their URL, by processing the page the browser can allow a user to select another link from which to load the next page.
Cache - Operation of a Browser to store page information such as images to improve reloading times.
CGI - Common Gateway Interface is a program or script that runs on the server that can process data from a web page and return data or HTML to the browser.
Client - A computer or program that uses the services of a server. Your computer running a web browser is a client of a Web Server.
COOKIE - A small message that your browser uses to store specific information such as session id’s, your name and address for auto-filling page forms etc. Cookie’s usually have an expiry date when the browser will delete them for you.
Domain - A scheme for organizing web page geographic or page type for example: .com (commercial) .co.uk (UK company), .gov (Government Agency).
Download - Copying files from the server to your computer (client).
Frames - A HTML page that contains other HTML pages.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol - allows two way file copying from the server (running FTP) and a client.
History - A HTML page that contains other HTML pages.
Host - File Transfer Protocol - allows two way file copying from the server (running FTP) and a client.
HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language - the main format for web pages providing links to other pages.
Hypertext - The ability to follow a link to another page or URL.
Internet - A huge collection of computer networks that us TCP/IP protocol to communicate.
IP Address - Internet Protocol Address similar in principle to a post code it is usually 4 numbers indicating a unique computer on the internet.
ISP - Internet Service Provider - a company / organisation providing the service of accessing the internet for a fee.
Hypertext - Found in HTML pages allowing linking of another URL to an item in the HTML page.
Java - A network aware computing language that can run on a range of computer systems and operating systems without re-compiling.
Javascript - A scripting language that runs within the web browser allowing dynamic page updates and complex interactions.
JSP - Java Server Page a server side language allowing dynamic pages to be created.
AJAX - Asynchronous Javascript and XML - allows for creative web application by allowing page updates without reloading the page, an example is the google maps application.
ASP - Active Server Page - A Microsoft server-side script engine for dynamic pages.
ASPX - An HTML file allowing the creation of Webform pages.
Meta-Data - Information that can be used by a browser to decide how to process a web page.
Newsgroup - Interrelated article that can be subscribed to and published.
Packet - A small piece of data with a target IP address that exists on TCP/IP networks.
Server - A computer system or program that provides data or services to client computer systems or programs.
Server-Side - Computer programs or scripts that run within a server computer system or application.
SHTML - SSI enabled HTML page.
SSI - Server Side Include - special script or codes that exist in an HTML page that i processed on the server before be sent to the client web browser
SVG - Scaleable Vector Graphic - an XML language describing 2D vector drawn graphics.
TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - Protocol that handles communication between computers on the Internet.
Telnet - Service providing login feature.
URL - Uniform Resource Locator - A unique address for a document on the web. <protocol>://<domain>/<path>/<file>
Usenet - Similar to newsgroups provides bulletin board style for information exchange.
WIKI - Hawaiian for “quick” allows for the gathering of information from a number of different people and providing this information in an organised manor.
XHTML - Extensible Hypertext Markup Language - based on HTML but formatted directly in XML allowing better use for formatter and search engines.
XML - Extensible Markup Language - a descriptive language for marking up documents and data allowing easier exchange of information and data between software systems.
